This disorder seems to have its roots in the second half of the 20th century as the first reports of a disease with its characteristic clinical features appeared in the 1950s. Unfortunately the various names used for the condition and the lack of clinical criteria for inclusion of patients make some aspects of the history somewhat uncertain
It is generally accepted that the report of Frumess and Lewis in 19571 of what they termed ‘light-sensitive seborrhoeid’ was the first to describe the condition. A little later Mihan and Ayres2 gave the condition the name ‘perioral dermatitis’, which has stuck, although other names were used such as ‘rosacea-like dermatosis’.3 Definitive descriptions were given by Cochran and Thomson4 and Wilkinson et al
